review 1: A corporate malaise novel (see also Joshua Ferris’ Then We Came to the End, or, even better, see the movie Office Space). Good, intelligent writing, but I never really cared what happened to Raymond, the protagonist. Neither, apparently, did any of the other characters in the book. But I’m hoping Porter writes a sequel, and I’m hoping it focuses on Nora, the ex-cheerleader who works in Employee Regard. Nora hides all of her real thoughts and emotions beneath a veneer of positivity, desperately hoping management will see how deserving she is, and she’ll get that promotion to Customer Acclaim. I’m betting Porter could do a lot with that storyline.
review 2: The beginning of this book really spoke to me. Depressed with your job searching for meaning and
... more making surveys to try and find out what is going on with the human race as a whole, but that idea did not go anywhere. The ending didn't quite make sense to me, and I feel like I've been left out of a big joke. Every review I've read of this book is about how funny it is, how satirical, what a wonderful book. I didn't get that. Sure the beginning was funny, but right towards the middle the big survey joke turned in a weird way and never quite fit in with the rest of the story. Two stars because it wasn't horrible, just wasn't for me, I guess. less

Probably not for everybody, but I loved it. It nests itself in the absurd, pivoting between laughter and existential grief. The writing is superb. But will disappoint readers looking for resolute outcomes.

This was certainly a clever book, but I just couldn't connect to it.

Fight Club meets Office Space. Rather pointless.

A quick read that both dark and quirky.
