The Danilov Quintet
review 1: What a painfully frustrating read. For 200 pages, this book was a real chore to read. I nearly stopped multiple times. You already knew what the narrator had yet to discover. So, I just wanted to get there already! Stop dropping bread crumbs leading to a destination that's already known and expected! Danilov was extremely frustrating as a protagonist and narrator. He was impulsive, stupid, and at times passive and wimpy. He was all over the board, inconsistent. He made assumptions and ran miles and miles with them without stopping to consider any other aspects. I spent most of the book yelling at him in warning or pointing out his glaring tunnel vision. I wanted to throw the book across the room so many times! What an idiot! All of that said, after the first 200 pages, it w... moreas kind of like crack. I read the last 340 in one day. I couldn't stop thinking about stupid Danilov, etc. I didn't want to but I couldn't stop. Even now, there's a part of me that really wants to pick up the second book of the quintet, but another part of me that says why would I put myself through that torture?! I don't even like Danilov! Iuda? Him, I find really intriguing. Him, I want to know more about. There's more depth there, more that makes him tick. Even Domnikiia, there's more that I want to know about. I may not trust some of these characters, but I still find them intriguing. I think that if Danilov was, well, a stronger or more intelligent person or if the narrator had been different, I would have enjoyed this more. It's an interesting premise. The vampires are definitely not the sparkly, brooding, dating type. More like vicious, bloody animals. It's dare I say, fun. Anyway, I don't know yet, if I'm going to continue with the series. (After perusing reviews for the next book, it looks like stupidity prevails not only from our narrator but from others in order to move the plot forward. Uh, I'm not fond of stupidity in a story, or an author thinking his audience will buy a stupid plot point and go along for the ride. - Sorry, sir! - I'm getting off, unfortunately.)

Starts and progresses very slowly but picks up and has a very good ending.
