review 1: Readable, but not all that good. I picked it as a holiday read because it sounded like an interesting blend of historical adventure and horror/thriller. There are two major issues with this book. Firstly it;s about twice as long as it needs to be, with the protagonist shuffling back and forth between the same old locations, wondering about the same old things - I think a shorter version would have been much pacier. Second.....vampires?!?! I nearly threw the book out of the window when that was revealed as I expected something far more inventive.

... moreot anyone I could root for. Plus, it is about vampires, which is way overdone now and not a theme in which I have much interest. Still, there was just enough there to pull me along, and admittedly the last 100 pages were pretty interesting. It was not until then that I felt like I wanted to know what happened. I likely won't recommend it or read others in the series, but I have to compliment Kent for his work. If I did not know it, I would easily think Kent wrote it in the 1800's. less
