review 1: This has a fairly conventional murder plot, which doesn't really get going until almost halfway through the novel. Much of the book is taken up with philosophical speculations, of the female narrator, or various garrulous characters she meets. This probably sounds awful, but in fact the ambiguities even in the fairly simple plot worked, at least for me, in making the book suspenseful and intriguing. And the philosophical speculations, usually on the theme of memory, and how the dead are remembered, or not, or are present, or not, or both at the same time, are also actually very interesting I thought, particularly in the context in which they're presented. I enjoyed reading this very much. The sort-of literary criticism in the book made me also want to read Balzac's Colonel... more Chabert, and maybe even The Three Musketeers, and to take a look at Macbeth again. The representation of the publishing industry made me very glad I'm not in it.
review 2: This book is both a mystery and a narrator's relationship to that mystery, and it's interesting to see them both unfold, not necessarily in tandem. But, and maybe it's the translation, it's also just a forum for musings on relationships and humanity. Since 90% of the book is the narrator talking to herself, it's pretty easy for the latter presentation of the novel to dominate. The musings aren't without merit, but they come close to pouring so much molasses over the mystery that it's difficult to care much about that part of it by the end. less

Una trama débil, poco creíble, sin lógica y mucha verborrea. Decepcionante.

I'll start again someday, got 15% in and was too slow for me right now.
