review 1: I'm pleased to come to this series at the beginning, and now to find that there are more titles in print so that I can continue to follow the adventures of this Gentleman Captain of the Restoration English navy.I did not know before reading the book that its author is a noted professional historian of the period. While it is fine to know that Davies' historical context can be trusted, it's also important to note that this is just what it is intended to be: a well-written nautical adventure story.
review 2: Gentleman Captain is an excellent book that takes the traditional historical naval fiction genre and shifts it back to the 17th century, throws in an inexperienced gentleman as captain of a warship (with whom we learn about the strange world of the sailor), p
... moreicks up upon tensions of the period following the Civil War and Restoration, and mixes them all together into a well-written and exciting story.True the book does start off quite slow, but once the ship sets sail everything comes alive with some wonderful characters developing chapter-by-chapter, an intimate look at life on board a ship of the period, a series of tensions and problems among the crew becoming apparent, and culminating with an exciting naval encounter at sea.If you like historical naval fiction you really should give this book a read. less
