review 1: Breaking Cover by J.D. Rhoades is the classic crime/ thriller premise. Our protagonist Tony Wolf, one of the best F.B. I. agents on record, has gone underground. Missing. Vanished. Why? Is he dead? He suddenly emerges from hiding when he helps two young kidnap victims. What develops is among the most improbably, unbelievable, and violent story I’ve read in some time. There is little plot here beyond the bloodshed and improbable action sequences. The dialogue comes straight from a B-level noir film. “Come on. Let’s get outside.” “Are you a policeman?” “No. Come on, let’s get outside.” This blazing exchange continues with “you shot the bad guy.” Even children have more depth than this. His female characters are stunning caricatures; depicting no real wom... morean I’ve ever known. By chapter twenty-three and the introduction of the obligatory stripper, I had had enough. There’s a growing trend in the popular arts today that substitutes sex and violence for depth. Instead of suspense, tension, character development, or substance, authors simply insert an erotic bondage scene or a brutal slaughter. Rhoades relishes style of writing. His narrative is gossamer thin so instead we’re treated to violent beatings, crunching bones, and “what the f*&^” as fists fly.If cheap and violent is your market, this will satisfy. For those who demand a little more from their art, skip it.
review 2: A good even read, good action and a fast story-line. I feel in order to move this to a higher rating it needed more “meat” and a greater developing of the story.I will not go into the story-line, many other reviews have already done this so I will just rate the book on its elements (0 to 5 being highest): Protagonist Development: 3 Antagonist Development: 4 Minor Character Development: 2Storyline: 3 Setting: 2 Theme: 3 Writing Style: 3Overall Rating: 3 less
