review 1: I found Mambo in Chinatown to be very well written compared to much literature being cranked out these days. The characters were all believable and the sub plots kept me wondering what was going to happen right up to the very last page. I am a harsh critic and rarely rate a book more than 3 stars. Having said that I am a firm believer that the rating of literature is in large part in the eye of the beholder. I probably loved this book because I grew up in Southern California where there was a large and charming (to me) oriental presence. I walked home from school past their gardens, their shops and museums. Their children were kept isolated from "outsiders" (us)and we would peek out and examine each other...rarely speaking though. The sights, smells and sounds have been... more held in my mind for 70 years and I thought that Kwok did an excellent job at bringing this home to her reader.
review 2: First, I am a dancer. I think that one of the most wonderful things about this book was the way the author portrayed the thoughts of someone arriving at dancing as a passion. I really enjoyed the characters, and the exploration of the disconnect between the world the narrator inhabits (Chinatown) and the greater world was interesting to explore as a Caucasian who has never been in that situation. It kept me turning pages and gave me thought beyond just a quick guilty pleasure read. I'll check out other books by this author. less

Well told story. Not as good as her first book, Girl in Translation, but enjoyable anyways.

3 1/2 stars. Enjoyable light reading, maybe a little unbelievable and predictable.

It was okay. There were parts of it that were really slow.
