review 1: Weezie lives a hard life. She is 11 years old and lives with her Momma and two half-siblings in a 2 bedroom trailer. All the children have different fathers. Her single mom says she’s bad even though she tries to be good. Most of her time is spent caring for these half-siblings. Weezie's beloved and loving grandmother died 2 years ago. Momma works as a waitress at the local pancake house and hates every minute of it. There’s too much work, too many children, and not enough money; and Momma takes her frustrations out on Weezie, Weezie doesn’t know anything about her father, not even his name. Her momma is embittered because he deserted her when, as a high school student, she became pregnant and tells her daughter that “she doesn’t want to know.” But We... moreezie does want to know and she and her friends Calvin and Louella set out to do some detective work. They figure it out. It’s not a storybook ending. However, Weezie does a lot of growing up during the course of the story as she figures out who she is and what in her life is within her abilities to change. Strong and believable character and if perhaps a bit stereotyped, those stereotypes exist because they fit some situations. Excellent read. Late elementary through middle school.
review 2: This is a bittersweet story of a young girl searching for a fathers she never knew and one that her mother wants to forget. The theme is for the older range in juvenile fictions as it deals with deep feelings and tough struggles. Like the way the author has the main character discover her worth in spite of the negative environment around her. Liked the image of the encouraging teacher and friends. less
