review 1: Didn’t like this one as much as I had expected to. This is the author’s first (historical) fiction book, so perhaps she is having a hard time converting from nonfiction to fiction? Her writing seemed, at times, too laborious, ponderous, plodding. I had a hard time with it. Her style also seemed like it was reaching at times; for example, she described someone who was in a bear-hug as feeling something like, “They had been picked up in a big box and shaken all over.” Umm, don’t most readers have a clear enough understanding of a bear-hug, without then having to interrupt their reading flow to then imagine what it would like to be put in a big box, lifted up, and shaken all over? And then realize, ‘Oh yeah, like. . .a bear hug.” ??? Things like this wer... moree just a bit uneven and disruptive. Wouldn’t really recommend.
review 2: The book was somewhat engaging in the beginning but got increasingly more so. The story takes place in New Amsterdam during Peter Stuyvesant's time in 1663. Orphan children have gone missing and hysteria reigns. The main characters search for the killer during which time she is accused of being a witch and he is condemned to hang. Meanwhile, the colony is under threat of attack from the English king. I love historical fiction. Although this isn't my favorite time period, I found myself fully drawn in and engaged in the story. less

Good story but a bit too creepy for me - I had to skim through parts.

Early American mystery filled with history. I liked it.
