review 1: 3.5 stars. An interesting historical novel. I learned much about New Amsterdam that I didn't know and what living there would be like. The central conceit of the novel, the mystery of who or what is killing these orphans is interesting, but doesn't in itself really hold together. The relationship between Blondien and Drummand feels forced at times. This kind of summarizes the whole novel. All the characters are interesting but at the same time they occasionally feel false. Interesting but not gripping.
review 2: This book is about the Dutch colony settlement in the Manhattan area in 1663-1664. It provides insight into the Indian, Dutch, English, and African cultures while presenting a complex mystery of child abduction. Central characters include the orphanmaste
... morer who cares for parentless children in the colony, Edward Drummond, an English spy, and Blandine van Couvering, a she-merchant. Zimmerman’s novel is described as “thick with historically accurate detail”. less
