review 1: I am not exactly how much I liked this book. I did finish it pretty quickly. However, I am totally scratching my head and wondering if I really enjoyed the story. I figure this is going to be one of those books (series) that I will hold off final judgment until I have read at least one more book. Since this is a first novel for the author, I figure I can at least give the benefit of the doubt and allow for extra consideration by giving them another chance. I usually do this quite a lot for authors who are new to me- especially those whose first novel I read. Why do I do that? Because I think that the author has a lot of world-building to finish and I also think that there could be some first-time jitters that could cause the book to be slow. Some authors do we... morell after that first book; other authors continue to be horrible (I’m kind here and won’t bother putting the few authors who I tried to read all of their series, but just couldn’t subject myself to horrific writing any longer.)Let’s see, back to this book..What did I like? I thought the premise to the book would be quite interesting- female ‘Enforcer’, vampires, etc. It was just the execution of this was not enough to fully captivate me. I still am not even sure whether I liked the main character – Alex. I actually think I liked Varik a lot better. Or perhaps Alex’s brother Stephen. Why? I really cannot put my finger on it.Like I said, I am willing to try to read the second book to see if perhaps this is one of those books that I just needed more to actually enjoy it.Would I recommend this book? I would never say ‘This book is a MUST read! It is absolutely freaking amazin!’. Sorry, but I cannot gush like that over this book- I have gushed over other books before. But definitely not this one. I would say that you could read this book if you nothing else to read or needed a break from your normal authors because you did not want to finish up all their new releases and have to wait another year before you could read the next in a series. Perhaps you will like this book a lot more than me- but be prepared to know that this is definitely not some gushy romance novel. (I honestly do not mind that- I appreciate a good urban fantasy and a good romance.)
review 2: at the moment I obviously have bad luck with picking up good books or I am tired of urban fantasy. as I can't believe it is the second I have to work on my book pickings.I started this book after reading the first chapter and decided it is worth a try. I really liked the beginning, I could connect with Alex, I liked the tension and the suspense. I also liked Varik even if he is a little bit hollow as a character in my opinion.but at the middle I lost the connection. Alex started acting strange for the character she was described in the beginning. the story is quite good and there is a lot of suspense in there. Although I normally prefer first person stories to multiple point of views, the inside on the characters was quite good. therefore I think I am rating this one with 3,5 stars - and I will decide in the long run if I want to give the second book another try less
