review 1: Jeff Somers tells us that magic is quite real, and requires blood. Powerful magicians sacrifice many for powerful workings. Lem has never risen above the level of Trickster (paper from Pocket) because he cannot bring himself to use any blood but his own. He and his not-so-bright friend Mags survive by using small magic to steal from normals and cheat at cards. Then an accident leads them to Claire bound and gagged and covered in runes. She is apparently part of a whole set of women who are part of a grand working that has the potential to kill everyone in the world. That sets Lem, Mags, and Claire on the run and looking for help from powerful magicians, This modern, noir fantasy is impossible to put down. Hopefully there will be a sequel. review 2: Jeff Somers has proven that if done well enough, with enough punch and verve, even I will enjoy an "urban fantasy" read. I've never been one for the mixture of magic and guns, cars, etc. In fact, I went out of my way not to read this book (sorry Jeff) due to the setting and cover. Yes, I admit it, a well-designed cover goes a long way for the artistic side of me, and this book does not have it, and comes off very generic. Oh well, all that nonsense aside, Jeff Somers does not drop off in his change of pace from the very enjoyable Avery Cates adventures in the slightest. The writing has that same Somers stamp without seeming derivative or having the narrator come off as a clone of his prior efforts. If I was able to give it 4.5 stars, I would. A very enjoyable read for a weekend escape to the beach. Also, if bychance you picked this up for the cover (I weep for you) or the urban fantasy setting, do yourself a favor and read the Avery Cates saga as well, I think I've probably reread 'The Electric Church' and 'The Digital Plague' four to five times apiece. less

The beginning of an amazing, gritty noir with remarkably likable low-lifes.
