review 1: Hilarious! Strand nailed the antics and conversations between a camp counselor and only 5 meek boys of a Survival camp meant to make real men of wimps. Max the counslor isnt much of one to deal with kids. He is more like a Marine sargeant with a love for using weapons. The book is written as a screenright being read by the so called characters. I couldn't wait to see what was on the next page.
review 2: I was supposed to start reading a serious memoir by an American diplomat, but I got a little derailed by this book. This is a YA novel, but don't let that turn you away. It's a very funny, fast-moving, and enjoyable book that can be appreciated by both teens and adults. The story starts with Henry, whose dad makes him watch a YouTube video advertising a survival
... more camp for kids:"The drill-instructor narrator was bald, dressed in camouflage, and had biceps as big as a standard-sized human head. The camera zoomed in on his face and Henry could see the vein pulsing on his forehead, like he had an angry worm in there. 'It doesn’t have to be this way!' the narrator said, his voice echoing dramatically. 'We can Fix! Your! Son!'"Needless to say, Henry ends up going, along with his best friend Randy and three other boys. The camp is run by Max, a drill sergeant who quickly makes them all miserable. However, Henry quickly learns there are good points to being at camp - such as Monica, his beautiful, smart neighbor from the girls' music camp. The story moves quickly and becomes serious with the arrival of some mobsters. The boys - with the help of Monica and her friends - have to use the skills they learned from Max to defeat the gangsters and save their own lives. The book has some alternating chapters (such as Chapter Zero) which reveal that the story was make into a Hollywood movie with the typical over-the-top action hero changes. Personally, I found these chapters annoying and skipped them. They added nothing to the overall story. There are also humorous "wilderness tips" at the end of each chapter such as: "If you need to start a fire, you can burn the pages of this very book. Yes, you’ll hurt the author’s feelings, but that’s okay. Your life is more important. (If you’re reading this as an e-book, setting it on fire is not recommended.)""I hate to be Mr. Obvious, but really , the best way to survive the wilderness is to stay inside. Sure, the outdoors has some cool stuff to see and do, but is it that cool?"You get the idea. This is harmless fun - no sex, profanity or bathroom humor. There is some violence, but it's not graphic or gratuitous. This was a fun read and I will probably read it again. less
