review 1: I find myself in a minority (so far as reviewers are concerned at least) by not liking this novel very much, but I am adding it anyway solely so there can be an alternative point of view. I am sure there are many readers of horror who, like me, seek some depth in their stories and some exploration of the human condition (through the medium of fear) and who have found writers like King absorbing precisely for those reasons. This novel has no elements of that. It has been suggested to me that I was wrong to expect it - that it doesn't set out to answer life's questions and never declared itself as a story that was trying to.... Well, I accept that. All I am saying is that if you want an experience beyond a story about a selfish lead character who is not bright enough to see ... morehow he keeps making his own situation worse by his own actions, then look elsewhere. If you are happy for a superficial love story about a boy and his monster (think Walt Disney trying out the horror genre) then good luck. You'll need a darker more thematic work to follow on directly afterwards or you'll find yourself wondering whether Mary Poppins should be re-classified as Paranormal Literature.
review 2: How many people can say they've met a real live, honest-to-goodness monster with huge, curved, razor-like claws at least three inches long, menacing yellow eyes, and teeth that are almost cartoonish in size and shape and have the capacity to tear you into shreds in a matter of a few frenzied seconds? Toby Floren can. Not only that, he befriends the hideous beast. There's an unspoken understanding between them, an innate sense of loyalty between the two, for you see they have a lot in common. They are both outcasts, loners, kindred spirits, if you will. Unfortunately, for those unwilling to play by the rules, the results can be catastrophic, even fatal. I found myself rooting for the two ill-fated "heroes." And let's be honest here, who wouldn't have done the same if faced with the likes of unrelenting hooligans like Larry and Nick and people who need to know when to mind their own business. Of course, there's always apt to be an innocent casualty along the way... less
