review 1: I started out very excited by this book. The FAQs before the book began were funny, the first half of the book was funny, but after that I started to lose interest. I finished the book quickly, because I really wanted to be able to return it to the library, and I had already invested myself in it (I was halfway through) but otherwise I'm not sure I would have finished. The characters are funny, the story is funny, it was just a little too ridiculous for me, and I can deal with some pretty ridiculous books. Despite that, there were some chapters that I found pretty darn funny towards the end, like the chapter where the narrator starts talking about how the book might be used for a book report although many might think it has no literary value. He throws a bunch of literary ... moreelements in, and that is funny. There are a number of chapters that are like that towards the end and it makes the story feel disjointed and like Strand got bored writing it. Maybe it was his attempt to make it seem more like a teenager was writing the story, but it made it difficult for me to keep all the ridiculous things that were happening straight. I enjoyed the story, it was a fun brainless read, but it would not the first book I've read recently that I would recommend.
review 2: A fast, cynical read aimed at the pre and early teen set, this goofy story is actually pretty funny. Never read anything by Jeff Strand before; he's a talented guy! It was a nice break from my usual thriller/mystery reads. The main character, writing in first person, tells his story to the reader with occasional short entries by his editor and a couple of others. I was drawn to it because of the "voodoo" aspect, but stayed until the end because I wanted to see what would happen next! This is a sign of a decent author.... Sorry I bought it in the Kindle version because a couple of my grandkids would love it! Unfortunately, not available at my library. Three and a half stars - I liked it. less

Slapstick is just not my thing. My students will probably like it, but... Moving on.
