review 1: This book was given to me by the man who initially got me into programming. When he gave me this book, he admonished me that high-level languages were great for applications, but a truly great developer understands the intricacies of the machine code he/she is compiling. After reading this excellent book, I can say that I have a much greater appreciation for the underlying processes of transforming my abstractions into IL, and what exactly that IL does on various systems.I really want the third edition, though, so I can see what kind of changes were made in order to support the more functional features of .Net 3.5 and 4, especially LINQ to and anonymous typing!
review 2: Great look and tour inside the CLR "blackbox" with insights into the thinking and theory
... more behind .Net.This is one of those rare computer books that can actually be read cover to cover but because of it's narrative structure, its usefulness as a reference book may be more limited. In fact, i would suggest that anyone who would want to use the book as a reference to read it cover to cover first.Later note: Much more insightful and educational than the 70-536 "study guide." less
