review 1: This is a great book and such a fun read! And it's got everything: dragons, zombies, pirates, knights in demon armour, mages etc. When I think about it, that is not necessarily a good thing in and of itself. Blending too many elements into one story could just create a jumbled mess of trying too hard. But that is not the case with this book. All these elements are woven together seemlessly in a rich and organic fantasy universe that takes all these staples of fantasy and gives them either an original twist or are just so well written it makes for a great epic fantasy adventure. The writing is tight and fast paced, but also very rich. This is an author who knows how to create a clear setting, vivid atmosphere, and engaging characters by saying just enough - in other words s... morehe has really mastered show don't tell. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes fantasy and wants a good stand-alone book that is extremely hard to put down.
review 2: The best way I could find to describe "The Copper Promise" would be: a classic fantasy tale, told through the eyes and voice of a modern author. It is a wonderfully captivating book, with interesting & sharp characters (Wydrin is phenomenal), that shines in both its little details and the epic scale in which it comes. It will leave you rooting for Sebastian & Wydrin since the beginning, and while we may be suspicious about Frith, it is easy to empathize with his quest for revenge.Wydrin is a woman with a very big 'W'; she is as natural and smart as can be, and no less courageous and loyal to those she loves. She also enjoys a bottle or two of wine, and occasionally burps - but hey, who doesn't? That's the point: in fantasy, stereotypes abound, and Jen Williams seems focused in shattering quite a few of those, all the while entertaining us with a delightful tale. Also, who said all gay men were effeminate? One of the characters will show you just how wrong that is.Be prepared to be hooked. "The Copper Promise" sense of epicness grows throughout its pages, delivering a fantastic ending - one that leaves you gasping for more.Jen Williams has become one of my favorite authors. less
