review 1: I read a lot. App. 3 books a week on average. And I love fantasy in all shades. I write this to put into perspective when I say: I have never ever met a more annoying, whiney and pathetic protagonist! This book was one uninterrupted concert of self-pity, self-deprecation and stupidity. Honestly, who wants to read on and on and on about her imagined faults and how no guy will ever be interested in her and so on? I gave it 2 stars, because its world was somewhat new and promising to me. But I only finished this book, because I really wanted to give it a chance, hoping it would get better any time soon. The main character, apart from being annoyingly pathetic, was also incredibly stupid. To just give an example (I’ll try to be vague so as not to spoil too much, but there wil... morel still be spoilers, so SPOILERALERT : There is this guy, who provides information about her origins and who saves her life and or dignity on more than one occasion. She moves from insisting on him being a dangerous stalker/murderer to being totally and utterly in love with him in a heartbeat, but ok. She then oversees him talking to a woman he is clearly angry with and fearful of. Yet she still convinces herself that she must be his girlfriend. When this same woman later contacts her and asks her to come to the Otherworld (allegedly to safe the guy bla bla), she complies, although a) Cade clearly didn’t want this woman to meet her, b) has warned her about visiting the Otherworld and c) even his spirit dog is behaving really hostile towards the woman. This woman then (supposedly) says something bad about Cade, which I somehow completely missed, cause what I heard was that he should have found Meg and turned her in, and that he failed to do so because he got distracted (implication: by her beauty and charm) and thus was sent away. Even after this woman attacks and tries to kill her AND Cade again comes to her rescue, she still believes that everything that woman said is true, that they are an item and Cade betrayed her. Honestly, how stupid can you be?She is also such a whiny, backless victim. Her school life is living hell because buhuu she is getting teased by the popular crowd(although she has really good friends and all). Once she gets so angry about some stupid tease at school, that all of a sudden her inherent telekinesis powers awake and she knocks the bully out with a pinecone. Yet, somehow, all the other times she gets into really dangerous situations and/or feels betrayed, she can't seem to muster up any anger and doesn't even try to use this power. I cold go on and on. Sorry, this is just too much. In addition, plot was thin and scarce and the pieces of interesting information about Meg and the world she came from were few and far between, scattered throughout the book, with weeks of boredom in between, where nothing ever happened, except more whining. After reading the whole book, I still know next to nothing about this world or its inhabitants. Nor about the characters, which remain incredibly undeveloped and shallow. Although initially I was really curious about this interpretation of Fairy and wanted to find out more about Meg’s place in this world, her origin etc., it was a strain to finish this book and the annoyed comments I left on my kindle left this book as colorful as a children’s book. I can’t even bring myself to read the second book of the trilogy I am so fed up with the heroine. And the slow pacing. Seriously, it’s as if they made a trilogy out of a short story.
review 2: A cyclical book that goes nowhere. I realize this is the first of a trilogy, so there is likely (hopefully) more to happen in future volumes, but something should have happened in this one. Instead, the same event keep happening over and over; no plot development, very little character development. There are many missed opportunities to build relationships among the friends in this book. Once again, here is a book based on non-communication. An attempt is made to build a story on people not talking to one another. This doesn't work in real life, and it makes for a boring book.I will not be looking for the second volume. less
