review 1: My daughter is obsessed with ballet and wanted to know about its history so we've been reading this together. I was a tomboy who never really understood the beauty of this art form and I am quickly being schooled by my child. Even if you are not a ballet connoisseur, this particular book is great for teaching history in general. From the female standpoint history class sucks. Many girls don't care about battles and war and the same goes for some boys. I learned more about world history from this book than I ever did in school, you really get a feel for what was going on in each society described. telling history through the eyes of an artist can often be more effective.
review 2: Apollo’s Angels was an interesting read, being quite a detailed and thorough his
... moretory of ballet. It fell apart in the final chapters, where the author essentially decides that ballet died with Balanchine, and there are no good dancers these days because they’re all too “flat screen”. You kids, off my lawn, etc.But up until that point, I really enjoyed it. I was increasingly curious as to how the author could pronounce so authoritatively on the quality of a ballet or performance that was not recorded in any way at all, but hey, grain of salt, right? less

A very thorough history of modern ballet - not at all the history I made up in my head.
