review 1: This is just a superb example of a thorough and yet completely accessible biography. Kloester remains sympathetic to her subject, but never allows that to blind her to the often uncomfortable realities of a flawed human. There's something utterly amazing about Heyer's dogged but always self-deprecating devotion to her art -- a term she would have certainly eschewed, but has fully earned. If you love Heyer's books, you'll find their creator every bit as fascinating. If you want to see the British publishing world of the 20th century, you'll get a interesting case study. A captivating story!
review 2: Jennifer Kloester relates the fascinating life of Georgette Heyer acknowledged queen of Regency authors. This title builds on an already excellent but different biog
... moreraphy by novelist Jane Aiken Hodge. Kloester paints a somewhat different picture of the prolific Heyer. The biography includes a wealth of research notes including references to archival notes as well as published sources. Although Heyer's legion of followers are legend (in the romance reader's world) this title provides much insight into her wish for more recognition as a literary author which she never received. Born in 1902, Heyer was close enough to the previous century that allowed her to find real person sources to accurately bring the Regency era to life in her books. Heyer still remains the "gold standard" for those who love the Regency period. This biography is a must read for Heyer fans and an excellent complement to the also informative Hodge title. less
