review 1: Oh boy, do I hate giving one star ratings. But, there it it.This book was SO BORING. The only reason I finished it is because I was reading it for a friends book club that I joined. I found it painful to do so. A little like having to read my high school history textbook. There was no emotional connection to any of the characters at all. The story was choppy. It was really sort of all over the place. Just not my cup of tea.
review 2: This was an enjoyable book for me, but it didn't quite measure up to Good in Bed, which is the only other novel that I have read by this author so far. I get that there's a theme in these books: full figured women who find success, love and happiness, but I was really looking forward to more laugh out loud humor. The only scene in h
... moreere that even came close was the "bank robbery" scene, and after working in the banking industry for 14 years, I still picked apart how unrealistic that was.I didn't lose myself in these characters enough to suspend my disbelief or really even become invested in them. I also didn't hate any of them; it was firmly in between. This one includes a lot of flashbacks and some point of view shifting, and I think the transitions could have been handled better. It was at times disconcerting to read because it took me a few lines of each chapter to determine where we were (childhood or present day) and to a lesser extent, who we were talking about.I thought some of the flashbacks were just not that necessary. There were pages and pages devoted to a spur of the moment trip that didn't really serve much purpose as far as the story was concerned. A happy memory, yes, but not crucial to establishing plot.Instead of humor, there was a good dose of depressing material here. Granted, high school is a difficult time for anyone who feels like an outcast for any reason. But this cast of characters seemed to have it more rough than I remember my reality being. Seriously, covering someone's driveway with graffiti on a regular basis because you don't like them? If I was Addie, I wouldn't have just scrubbed it off every time; I would have called the cops.As expected, the ending wraps everything up with a nice, pretty bow. It just seemed rushed and unbelievable considering what it took to get there. less

I liked this book better than I thought I would. Addie Downs is the quintessential fat girl who has no friends, is self-conscious about her self, her family, and just about everything else. Her brother Jon is an outgoing, well-liked kid who becomes removed from his family as he gets older and as he becomes more ashamed of them. Then one day a mom and her daughter move in next door and Addie has a friend, Val - a best friend forever. Only forever only lasts until high school when something happens to Val and Addie speaks up for her only to find herself shunned by everyone, including Val. Skip ahead, Addie has slimmed down, Val is back in town and on TV and plans a bit of revenge for what happened one night with smart alec Dan Swansea. What ensues is a belated coming of age for Dan, Val, and Addie and a somewhat mushy ending, but one I enjoyed nevertheless. Weiner captures well the self- consciousness of high schoolers, their primal fears, and their insecurities. Yes, it's a feel good book, but a well told one.

My second J. Weiner book, and definitely another satisfying read. This one definitely had a couple of interesting twists. I especially loved the flash backs, and how the back story was worked in to give context to the current story at hand. At first I got the idea that some stuff would have been a wee bit far fetched. In the end though, I saw where Weiner was going, and it made not just for an entertaining story, but one that makes you think just how quickly friendships can begin, but just how quickly the best ones can be totally destroyed. Very very good book.
