review 1: I can always pick up a Jennifer Weiner book at the library when I'm bored and expect a pleasant, if ultimately forgettable, tale of a young woman/women finding her/their place in the world amidst a colorful cast of characters, some setbacks, and some setups straight out of a soap opera. I actually liked this one better than most of her others that I have read. I felt bad for Ruth during the slow ruin of her sitcom and kept wanting her to stand up and fight for her vision. I was glad when she finally did make a play for her artistic vision and for the guy she was in love with. Everything wrapped up perhaps a little too neatly in the end, but I'm okay with it--I'm a sucker for a happy ending.
review 2: Not really my kind of book....another "girl overcomes a devas
... moretating event in her life", "is raised by her Grandmother", moves from the east coast after graduation college (with her Grandmother), a battles to find a good job in TV (not acting but script writing). Ruthie (our female protagonist) struggles with her relationships with men (specifically with two in particular), Falls in love with a third (later finds out her (Little Dave) loves her as well. Her efforts are rewarded as she is tasked with being the head writer/stagerunner for a new TV series (she wrote) "The Next Best Think". This is only the second story I've read by Jennifer Weiner, and honestly I probably will not read another. less

I've read most of Jennifer Weiner's books before and always really enjoyed them. I had high expectations for this book and for the most part it delivered. It was interesting reading about the behind the scenes of a tv show...I was rooting for Ruthie the entire way. It was a cute story that kept me entertained. The only complaint I have is what happens next!!?? I wanna know more! Perhaps the author did that on purpose to leave the option of a sequel open? If there is one in the future, I'd read it for sure.

This is one of my favorites from Jen Weiner. The story is so engaging. The characters are likeable. But I think I really liked this story because I know it is based on her real experience in Hollywood. It's apparently a common occurrence: You come up with a great idea for a show. A studio says they love it. They buy it. And then they change it. I'm do happy that our heroine, Ruth, triumphs in the end (just not the way she thought). But I really feel for all the show runners who don't come out on top.
