Rosie Hopkins' Sweet Shop
review 1: 2.5 stars. Ehhhhhh. Okay, so it was sweet. Sickly sweet, maybe. There were some enjoyable parts, but mostly the story felt rather bland. Rosie tries to appear feisty, but you can tell she's faking it. Lillian dropped the tough aunt demeanour too quickly for my liking, and in general the characters didn't feel very developed to me. I think Stephen was probably the most deep character in the book, and even then we didn't get to see him as much. I enjoyed those little descriptions of sweets though, and I will probably try the peanut brittle recipe myself, but overall, I don't see myself recommending this to anyone.
review 2: 3.5 starsAbout halfway through, the story really picks up. Characters outside of the main character take more shape and develop some personal
... moreity. One problem is the main character's relationship with her bf. She is loyal, and says he is this wonderful guy, but there is no supporting evidence. The character is fair to him (and makes allowances when she shouldn't, for his poor behavior), but the writer is not. Rather than a nice guy in a relationship that has gone stale, or was never a good match, he comes off like a jerk when he finally has a voice. From the halfway point, the book becomes quite good and stays that way...until the end. So basically, a fun, easy read, but you will probably get irritated with some things (it would spoil if I gave any detail). I would most likely read this author again.Goodreads still needs to adopt a system with half stars! I want to differentiate between almost-really good, okay, and barely good. Etc. less
