review 1: Just excellent! Thanks Book Club for voting this for our Feb read - I would never have picked this off the shelf - not a great fan of cakes and just looked a bit naff. Couldn't have been more different - found it hard to put it down and became totally engrossed in a real, gritty family tale told by Mother & Daughter. The characters just jumped off the page and I had no idea where the author was leading us. A sad, bittersweet - yet honest and humorous account of real emotions between different family members - all with their faults but non dislikeable. Didn't really want it to come to an end and am still wondering what really happened to Jess. Would also like to think that Anne's sons will turn the right corner from adolescence into adulthood.
review 2: I REALLY
... more enjoyed this book. It's well written, gripping, intuitive, the story was good and well laid out, and there were a nice amount of twists to it with no moments of "really?". On the cover a reviewer said "utterly compelling" and I would have to agree, I found it hard to put down. The characters are so very real, and written with a generous heart that shows we all have flaws and that's just the way it is, good and bad. I would like to have given this 4 1/2 stars - I would recommend this read, and will be seeking more from this author. less
