review 1: 3.5 Stars. This book is nominated for a Macavity and a Barry award for best first novel, awards that are given annually at Bouchercon. The book started out as a fast page-turner in which Nora wakes up to find her husband, a police officer in a very small rural up state New York town, hanging in the stairwell. Nora starts looking into why Brendan would kill himself and his past, which she learns she knows very little about. There is clearly something very wrong and corrupt about the local police department of which Brendan was a member. I didn't find Nora to be a very compelling character, and at times she seemed very naive and/or not very bright. That would pull me out of the story. There are other characters I did like, and a lot of seemingly unconnected facts and ... moreincidents are brought together nicely in the end. However, I didn't quite buy the reason for what happened to Brendan.
review 2: Milchman is a wonderful new voice in the suspense genre. She delivers a novel of quality in which the tension builds and doesn’t let up until you arrive at the surprising conclusion. I was hooked from page one. Her characters are real, you feel their pain, her plotting is first class, and her descriptions vivid plunging the reader into the dark frozen world that her characters inhabit, reminding one of the bleak, wintry settings of Steve Hamilton’s novels. Way to go, Jenny. Ruin Falls is on my next to-read list. less
