SPOILERS!!!
I still don’t like Claire very much. A grown-up woman still obsessed with the football she used to idolised when she was fifteen is a bit too much for me. Actually, she even says she often stays awake, thinking about Andy, while her attractive, interesting boyfriend is lying by her side!! Incredible!!! Mark just should dump her in my opinion. Even the parts in 1985 in which she describes her interactions with Andy are kind of creepy. In my opinion Andy shows too much interest in such a young girl, and he even gets flustered after mentioning the girl he is going out with. Why? All these description come from Claire’s point of view, so they are probably distorted because of her biased perspective. Even so, these football players are no fools, and they know perfectly well that all their fans have crushes on them, so paying special attention to a teenager is like playing with fire.
In the book I much prefer Frankie, who even as a teenager seemed to be more optimistic. She also had her crush on another player, but it is clear that she didn’t take it as seriously as Claire. At present she sounds more grown up than Claire and knows what life is really about. Despite her bad experiences in life, she has managed to make the most of it and appreciates what she has. Not like Claire who still thinks that Prince Charming will materialise at her feet if she tries really hard.
It is really sad about Frankie’s eldest daughter, Emily. Frankie was worried about her since she was losing weight too fast and had lost her appetite. When Claire noticed the bruises on the girl’s legs, I knew that Frankie would get bad news. Poor Emily is diagnosed leukaemia, and the doctor’s prognosis is not very promising. I just hope that the girl will eventually get well.
