review 1: This was a challenging read for me, as you could tell nothing good was going to happen. Just how bad is it going to get; how much worse can circumstances get; and how are these folks going to continue making faulty decisions based on the poor information at hand? While I struggled through parts, in the end I was glad I read the book. It covers a slice of life not generally covered in the books I read, but one that should be heard. While the time is approaching ten years ago, it is current and relevant, and the issues tackled still very much of today. It gave me things to think about.
review 2: Another book that I appreciated much more after discussing in class. This was a very interesting view into the world of a family during hurricane Katrina. The characters
... morewere interesting, some even being relatable. I felt that the narrative was sometimes a bit distracted, leaving me wishing I could speed through. I certainly didn't have the stomach for some of the scenes, sometimes having to close the book, shudder, and then continue reading. The idea of dogfighting was something that I couldn't get past throughout the entire novel. For someone to love and care for their animal so much, and then to fight them was an idea that struck a nerve. In all, it was well written, and i felt like her use of metaphor was beautiful. I remember the author coming to my school last year and she was a very interesting woman, and this is a very interesting novel. less
