review 1: 2.5 starsI actually discovered after accepting this for review, that I had purchased it close to release, and never did get to it in my pile. An historical romance title, and we all know that I am obsessed with them. Lysandra was an interesting character: her portrayal and motivations were often rather scattered, and while she came off as having a brain and a backbone she was often all over the place. Unfortunately she never really did develop fully as a person, far more tell than show, and with the aforementioned inconsistencies it was difficult to empathize with her at all. Andrew left much to be desired as a main character: again behavioural inconsistencies kept his character flat, and telling me repeatedly that his intentions are mostly honorable yet he then behaves ... moreas a knuckle dragging troglodyte really sends a confusing message. There was sex: this is a ‘modern’ historical, yet the hottest scenes were between secondary characters who aren’t even that integral to the storyline. While I had heard wonderful things about this author, and the premise of the book was intriguing, in actuality this story was little more than wallpaper, occasionally pretty, often annoying and almost forgettable. I purchased a copy of this title for my own personal library with no obligation to provide a review.
review 2: This might be a great book for someone else, but it just wasn't for me. I had a very difficult time believing in the character motivations and characterizations, felt there was a lot more telling than showing (saying that Andrew is gentle, yet he spends a lot of time physically shoving Lysandra around), and quite honestly the author's voice kept pulling me out of the story. Sentences felt very simplistic and lacking in detail or dimension, and the writing just didn't flow for me. Historical details don't generally pull me out of a story unless they're seriously egregious, but the dialogue and narrative contained enough anachronisms that I had a hard time feeling this as "period".I really enjoy Regency romances and , but I just couldn't get engaged with these characters and bring myself to care about them. less

Another mistress story, but one of the good ones. Quite poignant and well worth a read.
