Mistress Matchmaker
review 1: 3.5 stars for book 2 in the Mistress Matchmaker series. I really liked the first book (An Introduction to Pleasure) so I was hoping for a lot when starting this one. I felt bad for Mariah, because even after being a mistress for three years to one man, you'd expect some type of emotional commitment from your protector. Such is not the case after the death of her protector and finding out that all promises of being taken care of were lies. Enter John, best friend of now dead protector, who, unknowingly, has secretly loved Mariah from day 1. While typically the deceased is a spouse and not a protector, I like the best friend who's secretly been in love with the "spouse" trope. Add in the danger and the evil, bad man threatening his lady love and you have a great storyline. ... moreUsually. In the first book we know why Lyssandra attempts to become a courtesan and we can sympathize and understand her rationale. But there is no backstory to Mariah. Not that there is anything wrong with because a courtesan because you want to, but to become emotionally invested in a character it's important to know why she has chosen the lifestyle she has. John's history and horrible childhood is revealed, and he's understood. Mariah is just presented to us and we're almost expected to love her because John does. For me, there was nothing interesting about Mariah. I will say, though, that Jess Michaels does make the steam rise from the pages of her erotic romances.
review 2: For Desire Alone is a work of historical romance and can definitely be listed under the label of erotica. It gets very hot and steamy at times, but what I was surprised with was there was actually a decent story attached to the sex. Quite often the characters and story are left to suffer for the sake of a well written roll in the hay. This is not the case for Jess Michaels's work. She has incorporated all the hospitality, dress and demeanor of the time period and given us characters that we actually begin care about as the story progresses. less
