review 1: Sophie gets called to a secret island in the Pacific where her mom is working in a secret lab. After being reunited with her childhood friend Jim, the island begins to feel dangerous. The story started strong but then felt like it lost depth as it continued. Khoury seems to love her similes that felt a bit cliche. Interesting but felt like a surface kind of book with no deeper level.
review 2: I never usually read novels at a slow pace unless I don't want to finish them so soon. Jessica Khoury has a master pen stroke that can make even the most pleasant of scenes turn out to be the exact opposite. I would recommend this author to anyone who wants a reprieve from all the wishy washy nonsense that is currently on the shelves at the moment. Sophie, though naïve a... moret first develops into a strong character that cannot be compared to any other YA heroine. I can't wait for what this author brings out next. less
