review 1: I am always a bit befuddled at the end of Lethem's novels: the writing is unbelievably good, but I often wish there had been more of a "point" to it. Amazing characters are introduced and then just drift off. Tantalizing plot elements show up and then disappear. But then I think of all of the books where the author is determined to tie it all together and totally botches it and then I think I will continue to love and read every Lethem book he ever writes.
review 2: I had high hopes for this, as I'm generally a fan of Lethem's work, but this one never really grabbed me in the way that, for instance, Motherless Brooklyn or Fortess of Solitude did. Although there were some interesting parts to this generation-spanning tale of immigrant New Yorkers, I never really... more connected with any of the characters. If it had been written by another author, I may have given it an extra star, but for Lethem it was a bit of a disappointment. less
