review 1: To Iraq and Back......by Jessica ScottI was first introduced to Ms. Scott 's work when I read Because of You. I enjoy reading military romances, and she was a new author for me. I then read a review on The Romance Man's blog, the first romance novel he reviewed. I was totally amazed then to find out she was a Army officer, and her husband was deployed. I was impressed by her courage and dedication and so in awe of her bravery. Her second novel Until There Was You was just as enjoyable as her first. I learned that she was creating a book of her blog posts she had written while she was deployed. I don't read non-fiction very often but felt I wanted to get to know this woman , who is an author of romance novels, a wife and mother, and a military officer about to head to comb... moreat. It is a journey that was interesting in so many ways. She wrote of the everyday activities, relationships with the men and women around her, and a sadness I can only imagine from missing her children and their birthdays. There are no graphic details of conflict , but we feel the sense of loss and frustration when they lose one of their own. In my mind I can still see the flag draped casket she described. In my opinion, this would be a "must read" for young women thinking of joining the military, and authors thinking about writing, or in the middle of writing a novel. For me, it was a look into a career and way of life that is totally foreign to me, and showing how gratifying it can be.This was a very enjoyable read , and strengthened my respect for our young volunteer men and women who " Serve and protect". I recommend it highly.Thank you for your dedication and service. No compensation was offered or taken for this review.
review 2: The title of the book is To Iraq and Back--a blog documentary written by Jessica Scott, a career army officer stationed at Fort Hood.It is a year in the life of Jessica Scott, when she and her husband stood parallel duty in country during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. It is a year in the life of a military mother, separated from her two very young daughters by distance and time. It is a year in the life of a fledgling writer, struggling to learn her desired trade in situations of stress and isolation that most Americans never even encounter in their lives. It is time and distance and struggle, to do her primary duty as a newly minted second lieutenant in the USArmy, under wartime conditions, learning more lessons in leadership on a daily basis. Her profession as soldier sits next to her desired occupation as writer, and we are allowed to witness by her telling the growth she experiences in writing stories for publication. The intial idea, the fleshed out first draft, the revisions and editing are revealed in her frequent blog entries via the Internet, as well as discussions on family, military procedure, self doubt rants, and bit after bit of moments in her life over there. Comments on death, events, even lists of supplies essential for a female soldier's moral and physical survival are dropped into the online conversation. And, yes, it does become a conversation, as a few readers of her blog grow into many readers, returning the amazing favor of her daily blog entries as they offer comments, support, advice, physical supplies and more. There are timeless lessons put forth for us in this book: of a mother fiercely in love with her kids, her husband, her duty as an Army officer, and above all the radiant respect and love she carries for her country. We see through her eyes the struggle to do the right thing as a leader, the sorrow for her lost brothers and sisters in military service, and the twists and turns of being a woman in the so-called man's army.I enjoyed the brevity of the blog format, it encouraged me to keep on reading, to be there and like what this woman was creating in the far-off deserts of Iraq as she took her time in service there and turned it into something distinct and eloquent and true. Her own voice--in past tense, but read in the present, with lessons for the future . . . less
