review 1: Using clever workplay and twists on familiar idioms, Swaim presents the perfect book for boys and ghouls. This book of poems describes a carnival straight from the graveyard. Ashley's illustrations are dark and macabre, full of stylistic skeletons and beasts--kind of a Tim Burton meets David Shannon feel.Younger children will not find the humor in the puns and the illustrations may be too frightening for them. Even though they are not realistic, the devils, witches, ghouls and monsters are the characters from nightmares, not fairy tales. For those ready for the gross and gruesome plus humor, this will be the book.
review 2: I like the rhyming in these poems. They definitely help with the flow of the poems. This book is perfect for the kids who love the grue
... moresome. The illustrations remind me a lot of "Corpse Bride" and "Nightmare before Christmas." The topics, too, of course. I didn't look at the illustrations closely, because I am not into the gruesome. On a personal rating, I'd give it a 2 because it's not my thing. But I give it a 3 for knowing its appeal to kids and for the poetry being basically fun and fitting to its subject. less
