review 1: I found this to be an entertaining read with some heartfelt moments. Vivian and Oliver meet on a train and the chemistry is instant. They are both broken characters. While one is moving on the other is struggling. Can these two help each other? Vivs on a mission to lose her V card and who better than with Oliver. Great main characters with some super secondary characters. Loved the storyline with twists and turns that had me gripped. This is the first book I've read by this author but it certainly won't be the last as this was a brilliant read.
review 2: 4.5 "no take backs" starsThis was my first Jewel Ann book and I loved it! The writing was excellent, there was a wonderful cast of characters, and it was set in and around the Boston area I call home so it ju
... morest added a little something extra to make the story more special to me. As I recognized various landmarks mentioned, I could visualize the scene that much more vividly. Vivian and Oliver were wonderfully flawed but lovable characters in my opinion. They are 21 and 29 respectively at the start of the story, but both have a wealth of baggage that gives them a vulnerability that is visible right from the start even if the source is a bit of a mystery at first. We know Oliver just moved back to the area after spending 3 years out of state but he refuses to talk about what happened there, shutting down any time someone tries to bring it up. Vivian suffered a traumatic event in high school that has scarred her emotionally and physically, leaving her with some pretty big self-esteem issues when it comes to her appearance even though she is described as model beautiful. Neither feels they are worthy of love so they are not looking for a relationship but when they meet, there is no denying the attraction or connection between them even with an 8 year age difference. And the way they meet is actually pretty funny- after watching this really hot guy on the commuter rail train each day while eating her morning doughnut and coffee, she ends up next to him one morning. That turns out to be very unfortunate for her breakfast and his clothing! She bolts off the train at the next available stop but she soon finds out fate isn't done with them yet- and so it begins! As they get to know each other, they realize they have more in common than they initially thought and start to grow closer. They bring out the best and the worse in each other, but they just work together as a couple. Once they commit to trying a real relationship, both Vivian and Oliver are all in, no take backs, no matter how bumpy it gets. Oh boy, does it ever get bumpy as both their secrets are revealed! But through the emotions running high and the doubts, they find a way to fight through. I have to say I enjoyed Vivian- she showed a maturity beyond her age most of the time even as she displayed a certain innocence, and I do love a woman who is not afraid to enjoy a doughnut or piece of cake! Of course the way she enjoys her doughnut causes Oliver a bit of discomfort at times (and probably any other guy within viewing distance for that matter) ;-) Her banter with Oliver and her friends consistently brought a smile to my face, and she definitely brought out the heat in Oliver! I felt their pain as Oli struggled to work through his issues and his past making things challenging for both of them as well. Overall this was a pretty un-put-downable read for me if that is even a term but you get the idea. Go grab yourself a copy of Idle Bloom and strap in for the ride! less
