review 1: I'll admit that I was hesistant to read The Fence And Then The Trees because the story takes place in prison. I already knew that this would be a book of violence among men and despite the positive reviews that I've read and really liking the author, I still thought of not reading it.I'm glad though that I took a chance and read this wonderful and intense story. We meet the first main character whose name is Jack. Jack is a con man insurance scammer who got nabbed in one of his schemes and is now serving 3 years.Jack is always running a con, he uses his brains, charm, and sense of humor to get him out of some sticky situations. He might need a little bit more when he meets his cellmate Adder. Adder is a huge, muscular, hulking figure.Adder is mute by choice and violent in ... morea blink of an eye.Jack is rightly scared of him, and doesn't know how he can last three years of his sentence physically unharmed with hid cellmate. JF Smith gives us flashbacks of both Jack and Adder's lives and we learn the background of these two men and what led them to their imprisonment. This book is not an easy nor fun read, we see tbe violence that inhabits both men lives, the anger, the rapes, cruelty, humor, and the bond thar men make while locked in prison. This is a story of two men who find each other and learn to trust and possibly love.Like I said, it's not an easy read, but one of the best books I've read this year.
review 2: It was a really intense read. If you get upset about what happens behind prison walls then this isn't the book for you but I found it really interesting and full of action and suspense and friendship between certain grps in the prison system. I was definitely getting anxious to get to a resolution between Adder and Jack and JF Smith didn't disappoint me. All the books I've read by him and so full of feeling and depth and you get so caught up in the story you forget about everything else and want to do nothing but read his story!! Another hit in my opinion by this author. less
