review 1: LOTS of kids in this one. I struggled to remember who was who. lol This story was just okay for me. I liked the different things that each kid got themselves into. I got a little tired of being up in Tommy's head. I thought for sure that all of the happenings would make this story super exciting but for some reason it fell a little flat. Maybe because Tommy was so sad all of the time? I might read this one again, possibly not, though.
review 2: Although It's glad to see that love between Tom and Bobby emerged tentatively and gradually from their friendship, this book isn't all about romance. It's not even the key word. The key word is family, an entity that barely interests me but clearly means a lot to most people, including Tom. The way he sacrificed
... morehimself for his siblings was so painful and struggling that Bobby even called him a martyr. (Funny that Bobby was called a saint by Tom's sister. I guess that's one match made in heaven.) Dropped out at sixteen, Tom stole, dealt drugs, he did whatever he could to protect his siblings because his father and stepmother were junkies, alcoholics and thieves that stole money from their children. The time they showed up in the house was the beginning of the nightmare. He fought half his life to build a family and it was destroyed by his own parents again and again. So, when Tom's house was burnt down and all his brothers and sister were taken to the emergency placement, I almost felt the pricks of tears in my eyes. Luckily he has Bobby and Judy, they put Tom under their wings. A person who'd been trying so hard to be a protector finally found his own safe haven. less
