review 1: Eh. I liked the cover of this book about a hundred times more than I liked the pages (except for the pages with photos. Golden puppies make me all kinds of sappy). The writing was kind of stilted, probably because the author is a journalist, not novelist, by trade. The book plodded along at a very slow pace, and included a lot of details that were unnecessary; however, I didn't completely dislike it. This book was kind of like decaf coffee-- I could read it right before falling asleep and put it down w/out feeling compelled to stay awake afterward. Scout is a seriously cute dog, though.
review 2: Ms Abramson seems to lead a surprisingly normal life for someone who holds as high and important a position as she does at the New York Times. And I did not pick
... more up vibes of her being a workaholic, which was a pleasant surprise. These factors above seem admirable. However, I cannot forgive Jill and her husband Henry for getting their dog Scout from a breeder rather than from a shelter. She even talks about how there are plenty of dogs of the breed she wants in the shelters. But she and her husband Henry have an overwhelming desire to have a puppy. My answer to this is that we cannot and should not necessarily have everything that we want in life, and it mostly does not do people who are fortune enuf not to be poor any harm to give up something that they want for the greater good. Hello! You unfortunately set a bad example, Jill. less

Good story that tells of the challenges and joys of a golden retriever puppy!

Very self indulgent. Tolerable if you have a dog but still pretty boring.
