review 1: This is one of those light, easy reads on my bookshelf. It's not full of depth or dimension but a fun read all the same. Overall, I liked Ingenue and plan to finish the series by reading Diva. Both Vixen and Ingenue read the same for me -- a slow build, a sudden connection to the characters and then off racing with the drama. I started both books not really sure if i'd finish them but both times the last 100 pages hooked me in. I also find it tough to read stories about young teenage girls galavanting around these large cities, completely ignoring the social norms of the time. With that, I love that the author focuses on the glamourous details -- going in depth about the decor of the Opera House and always giving fantastic descriptions of the dresses. All of that said, i... moret's young adult fiction for a reason and a fun, bright read all the same. A good read overall.
review 2: *Spoilers involving the end of Vixen!Absolutely gripping! I could not put the book down! The book picks up a little time away from where Vixen ended, with Gloria and Jerome struggling to survive, Clara and Marcus testing their love, and Lorraine simply trying to be. Gloria and Jerome's story takes off without a hitch, leading to plenty of problems to be resolved, tests that their love must overcome, and this edition to Gloria's life is certainly my favorite, with more of a loving, even if it is a poor situation, background for her to settle against, and more scenes of her and Jerome, which, in these scenes and with the feelings Gloria is feeling, shows how much she truly loves Jerome, more than it did in Vixen.Clara and Marcus's love was my favorite in Vixen, and I rooted for them from the moment they met. But this portion of the series didn't explore their love in the way I thought it would. It focused more on Clara trying to avoid the life she'd tried so hard to throw in the past, which she dug back up to live near Marcus in New York. It then spends more time with her at parties to be a writer than being with Marcus. When Marcus and Clara fight, it takes seconds for it to end, and ending with Marcus leaving Clara and telling her to figure things out for herself. It didn't show that they were in love, it was more like they were a convenience for each other. It was a bit disappointing, but happy, since Clara finds what she really wants to do with life. And Lorraine, the character I truly hated from start to end, has not changed. She moves to New York, not only for school, but to continue her escapade against Gloria, which arose from Gloria thinking Lorraine told about her being a flapper. Tragically, when things begin to change for Lorraine, things take a turn for the worst again with her new beau Hank, which was a bit saddening. Even if Lorraine is a terrible person, she deserves some sort of love, someone to care for her. All in all, the book was a fabulous continuation of Vixen, leading to more terrible mishaps that need solving, and to another book! So excited to start Diva! less
