review 1: While I did not care for the author herself, based on her story, the writing was great and I had a hard time putting the book down. Plus, I remember reading about the events she describes in her book. Why didn't I care for her? I found her to be a whiney crybaby. Oh, I'm adopted. Oh, I have to become a stripper. Oh, now I'm an escort. Now I'm a member of a prince's harem in Brunei where I am passed around to various men for sex. Now I need a bunch of tattoos.But--her journey is interesting and she DOES earn a lot of money and jewelry during her time in the harem. Side note: money is very important to me since I don't earn a lot of it, so I sit up and take notice of people who do.The book isn't salacious so if you're looking for a porn read, you'll be disappointed. But if yo... moreu'd like a peek into an unusual life most of us could never live, this is a good book for you.
review 2: I first discovered this book through the recent Facebook post about the application of Hudud law and the contradiction between the application and behaviors of the royal family in Brunei. I was attracted to the name of the book, the word "Harem". I was thinking, a story revolving a modernized harem, totally cool! Definitely a fresh theme to write/read on.The author, Jill Lauren, wrote her stories of her being how fucked up she was during her teenage years and also how rebellious she was towards her parents. She was an adopted child of a stockbroker and a housewife, her biological mother was a ballerina who was forced to give her up in order to continue expanding her career. To me, she seemed like a spoilt and ungrateful little brat. I just thought that way after reading the part where she treated her parents like shit. Not being judgmental, but she's adopted right? Wasn't she supposed to be more grateful to have a family who treated her so well and provided her a good home and sufficient education? Read my full review on spintheleia.tumblr.com less
