review 1: I feel that the paintings in this book had much more value than the actual content. The story itself was not bad, it raised a good point and shows that there is a huge world out there besides our shallow human one. But the pictures! Unfortunately, one thing that really bothered me was how the pages were set up. The designer split the pages in funny zig zag, diagonal ways that made it difficult to figure out which way to read. This book would've made 5 stars if it weren't for that.
review 2: What a great idea for a hook! "At bedtime when your room is as quiet as can be,... Pretend you're hearing lions roaring in the dark...." The rhymes don't quite work, as other reviewers have said, so when you read it aloud, try to avoid letting your voice get sing-songy. T... morealk with the kids - I'm sure you-all can think of animals Arnosky didn't include. What is the wolverine doing as you rest after lunch? Or, for older children, imagine an animal that lives in a different time zone: If you live in, say, the UK, what time is it in SE Asia? What is the orangutan doing at this very moment? I think an active involvement with this book would go a long way towards helping kids feel connected to Mother Nature and all her children.I hope your library doesn't put an RFID tag right on top of the author's notes. less
