review 1: I was shocked when I saw this book in the store. Partly because I never knew Jim Carrey was writing a book, and partly because I couldn't believe how strange it looked, even coming from someone with his reputation. I understand a comedian writing a wacky book, but this was to a whole new level of wacky. The book is all over the place, which is fine for a children's book if it is done right, but in my opinion this one isn't. It seems like he never read it twice before publishing it, and the biggest problem for me was the choice of illustrator. Again, I get the wacky concept, but the images in the book look like 90's primitive digital art in a very bad sense, and in some parts the book actually seems 'druggish'. I would feel weird reading this book to my child, despite the n... moreice message it is trying to convey. How Roland Rolls only got weirder and weirder as my wife and I turned the pages, and the story just kept rolling on unnecessarily (68 pages).I see the potential in this story and the idea of Jim Carrey being the inspiration for the images, but I wish he would have been a little bit more serious about making it feel finished and compositional and presentable. It is very raw, like a rough draft of a book.I still appreciate what Jim Carrey is trying to do, which is to reach out to children. I am happy for that, and as a children's book lover, I hope he can make more attempts in the future to win me over.
review 2: Naturally a 5 Star review for one of my all time favourite people. My parents bought me this book for Christmas because of my love of Jim Carrey. I'm currently 23, but I'm not going to deny how much I enjoyed it. It was a creative and cute story with the vibrant illustrations making it exciting and pleasing to the eye. I recommend this book to any parent looking for a new bedtime story, or to anyone like me, who enjoyed reading it aloud to her Mother first thing this morning.JulY less
