review 1: This collection of novellas contains all of the classic elements of Harrison's work: lots of sex, booze, fishing, dogs and walks in the woods. Brown Dog, or B.D., is a simple fellow with some admirable traits, and some that may be baffling, until the reader understands where Brown Dog is coming from. The stories paint the story of a man who only knows financial poverty, but who is rich in his connection to the Upper Peninsula landscape of Michigan. A bit far-fetched at times, the stories contain some characters who are endearing, and some who are repelling. You'll be entertained along the way.

The first time I read a Jim Harrison the novel included the first of these novellas. I was hooked. Being a Michigander and having had friends from the U.P. (Upper Peninsula) I was somewhat familiar with the setting. It was great to have this colorful guy in one place. less
