review 1: p. 14 The world is a wobbly place, so is the mind.p. 21 She was what you would call an off brand peach, real pretty to some tastes but a little exotic to the local boys.p.38 My mom used to say that Dad had mental problems but before she died she admitted that Dad just had too much life in him for one body.p.63 Staring at the river I began to wonder what we are doing when we are alone. Maybe we don't count for much unless we are rubbing against others.p.72 Time tricks us into thinking we're part of her and then leaves us behind.p.77 I'm sort of neutral in terms of religion but ever since I was a kid I've thought moving water to be the best thing God made.p.78 Having no talents myself I was silly with admiration for someone who did. p.82 My friend AD said that sex in non-tra... morediotnal society was always up for grabs. It was like tennis with no net played in a gravel pit.p. 88 How do we truly get rid of untruths?p.93 I didn't have a kitchen, or a dog, or a wife, or a farm for that matter. I suddenly felt like I had as a boy on my first descending elevator down in Grand Rapids. Who and where was the driver?p.96 ...I entered the stretched chicken neck of northern Idaho. All the mornings in the world leave without returning.p.101 I stood there at the desk, my innards feeling quaky at the idea of spending a hundred twenty bucks for a night's lodging buth then doubted that my parents in the land of the dead would be aware of my transaction.
review 2: This fresh, rueful, funny novel is an unexpected and heady delight from a mighty American writer. A retired farmer, onetime teacher and English major, seeing his marriage collapse, seizes the opportunity to accomplish his long-deferred fifty-state project with a road trip. He heads across country, visiting family and friends, researching state birds, flowers, mottos and names, and contemplating life in general, one tire-spin ahead of cellphone pursuers and OnStar interventions. Full of life, and wonderfully readable. less

My first experience reading a book written from a man's perspective. Loved the Michigan references.

Good. Better than The River Swimmer.
