review 1: Really really good. First I've read of Shepard, won't be the last. A great mix of humor and pathos—these stories seem to be doing exactly what the author intends them to do. Just total control of the language. Also an insane amt. of research clearly goes into these pieces, though the research is all background, not the focus. Sometimes things feel a tad samey, like male-in-difficult-situation-woman-waiting-at-home-for-him, be it war or mountain climbing or whatever, but hey. Still a fantastic collection. A couple stories were a bit boring, like one set in 1440, but that's okay.
review 2: I don't tend to be a fan of short story collections, but if there ever was a reason to change my mind, it's Jim Shepard. Holy smokes! He is a master researcher (wowie!) and... more an even better writer. Each story brought me to worlds unknown and previously unimaginable before leaving me devastated and cracked right open. These are heart breakers that taunted and tantalized, worth every turn of the page. less
