review 1: I originally picked up this book because I saw that the amazing comedienne Jo Brand was the author, but then I started reading. Unlike a lot of famous TV personalities that try their hand at another skill, leading only to failure, Jo Brand shows that she could have made her fame through her writing.By writing what she knows (basing the story around a mental illness when she used to be a physiatric nurse) the story jumps out of the page and tugs at your heartstrings, Gina feels like a real person, not just the nutcase that leads the story from one point to another. It was also refreshing to read the story from the family's point of view as well as snippets of Gina's. I was in love with the sub plots that showed the normality of the family, despite the obvious upheaval in the... moreir lives.I was, however, disappointed in the ending. The last line was genius but the final chapter titled 'finale' was a bit of a disappointment compared to the rest of the novel. I personally would have preferred to see more of the relationship between Alice and Mark, the proposal between Keith and Marie and the meeting of Dunk and Bighead and Wobbly.Despite the ending the novel was one of the best that I've read in a long time and would definitely recommend it.
review 2: I love Jo Brand (an amazing British comedian with a deadpan cutting wit) so much, she is part of my imaginary extended family - a bolshie, foul mouthed loveable aunt. Brand's experience as a psychiatric nurse underpins this novel - a poignant yet humorous read which follows a wild exuberant woman's decline into mental illness & the zombying effect the drugs needed to control her condition have. Although it is more from the perspective of the isolating effects the situation has on her family, particularly her daughter, who turns to the solace that only prolonged listening to Morrissey in her room can provide. I always like a book with a bit of good british eccentricity, and thought the book started off really well but it did seem to go downhill slightly as it went on - then whammy - a totally unrealistic & incongruous ending that seemed tacked on. The ending was a real shame as I did love the book overall, although the last line did really make me smile :) less

This was the first book of Brand's I have read, despite loving her stand up. It didn't disappoint.

A humorous, quick read about a girl growing up in rural England with a mentally unstable mother.

It has charming bits, but too tidy and unlikely an ending. As a bit of fantasy it was all right.
