Goodreads Rating: 3.85 / 5

My Rating: 5/5

I suggest this book for anyone who enjoys a thrilling novel with a wildly unexpected ending. It is brilliant, beautifully written and one hell of a story.

A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.
The truth.

We Were Liars is a modern, sophisticated suspense novel from New York Times bestselling author, National Book Award finalist, and Printz Award honoree E. Lockhart.

I have been wanting to read this book ever since it first came out. Yesterday I was in a book store spending all the money meant for this years Christmas presents. And there on the bookshelf I see the familiar cover of a book I’ve been desperate to read. So I added it to the pile and spent today reading, finishing and going into my usual post book depression.

Cadence, Johnny, Gat and Mirren spend their summers together on a beautiful island owned by Cadence, Johnny and Mirren’s granddad. As the Sinclair family get together every summer these four teenagers (known as the Liars) have an unbreakable bond. Until Cadence has an accident and her amnesia stops her from remembering what really happened during Summer Fifteen.

Lockhart brilliantly leads the reader through the confusing summer two years after Cadence’s accident. We slowly learn the truth of what really happened to Cadence. It’s difficult to know the difference between truth and lies, and Cadence’s memory seems an unreliable source of information but in the end it all makes perfect sense.

This book is easy to read, as Lockhart’s style of writing is simple and precise. Her characters are realistic as she does not shy away from showing us their true darkness. In the mere 225 pages Lockhart reminded me how much I enjoy a good puzzle, and how much a surprising ending can make any book into an instant favourite.
