review 1: This book was one of the best graphic novels that I have read in a while. This book was a mix of adventure and supernatural I guess you could say. I don't think that we found out the main characters name though out the course of the story, I also think that this was the beginning of a series so I think it would be nice to know the main characters name. I had a very hard time imagining all the monsters that they talked about and where she lived. Overall I think that this book was a nice first book to a series.
review 2: I came across this in my local library a few weeks ago and thought nephews 1 & 2 might like it; they did, to the extant that my sister and I both bought a copy for them without consulting one another -- guess I'll keep mine, as I really enjoyed i
... moret too and will read it again myself. It can be hard to find good graphic novels for younger children. (The nephews are grades one and three.) Most graphic novels for younger kids are over-simplistic and dull, and in my opinion, are doing their bit, along with far too many of the 'beginning chapter books' published these days, to stifle and shrink children's imaginations and vocabulary and put kids off reading altogether. The Golden Twine is a very satisfying defiance of this trend. It tells a highly engaging, imaginative adventure story, with lots of suspense and humour and a brave, orphaned hero with a mysterious past who is determined to choose her own destiny in life. The art is nice and clean in its lines, each panel a balancec composition, not densely cluttered and hard to decode, but not bare and dull, either; there's lots of detail and a few lovely still, contemplative scenes amidst all the action. This installment comes to a satisfying resting point at the end, one problem (Suri's abandonment by the merchant caravan which has been her home and her first clash with the caitsiths) overcome, with Suri, Byron the monster dog, and Byron's money-grubbing and abrasive imp of a creator setting off in search of giants. We know that the cat-monster caitsiths are still pursuing, though, now allied with the monster-hunting prince. The nephews and I are both looking forward to the next volume. less

Not sure why chosen as BES nominee as it doesn't stand alone and no second book is out yet.

This slightly dark tale of monsters, does include some humor and has ok art.

Cute little story, and I loved the art. I just wish it was longer.
