review 1: I wanted to read this book for ages and eventually purchased it and couldn't wait to get started. However, I really struggled to get into the story and to connect to the characters. I find that some trilogies seem to drag on for the sake of spanning 3 books and unfortunately I found that this book was one of them. I found that I didn't really care what happened to the characters and that's a shame. I don't know how some reviewers say that they read this book it one sitting. It was long and drawn out and not an easy read. It is very rare indeed that I fail to finish a book, especially one I have bought and I buy a lot of books and borrow from the library. At this stage I have not finished the book and may or may not decide to pick it up again. But there are so many great bo... moreoks out there that I no longer spend time on books I don't really like.
review 2: A great high fantasy novel from an Australian author. Recommend to lovers of fantasy. I enjoyed this story so much I bought the second one almost as soon as I had finished. (Sadly though I didn't enjoy the second one as much and was frustrated with how the character development happens) The character stories in this one however really drew me in and I'm still looking forward to seeing how it all pan's out for them. less
