review 1: As part of the series of the Ladies of Covington, this is a good read. As a stand-alone Christmas book, not so much. The reader will get more out of this book if there is some familiarity with the series, the characters, and their previous exploits.The story of the two Civil War soldiers, and the letters that reveal their story, are truly engaging. It is a great story. I found myself sliding through some of the other happenings and dialogue, though, to get to the real story. But what really gripped me about this book is due to the timing of my reading. I picked up the book last night (December 19, 2012) and the first thing I saw was the thank you from the author to the people of Newtown, Connecticut, for assisting in the author's research. Indeed, Newtown, Connecticut figu... moreres importantly in this book. I never dreamed that this book would introduce me to Newtown, Connecticut in a time before the events of last Friday.
review 2: Another book in the Covington series with Grace, Hannah and Amelia finding a cache of letters and the diaries of two young Civil War soldiers, one Yankee and one Confederate. The ladies do some genealogy research in order to reunite descendants of these two young men. The reader experiences the atrocities of war through the voices of these young men and the continuing challenges of Viet Nam and Iraq veterans and their families. As usual, love, family and all good things this holiday season make Covington a wonderful place to live and appreciate others. less
