review 1: This is about a high school girl from a mixed-race family that has experienced a recent divorce. She struggles at school with fitting into both Black and white cultural groups. Whilst experiencing frustration at school and at home, she is reading her father's book about her great grandmother escaping from slavery. It has a good ending and I think the issues that come up in this book are real- it's definitely still relevant.
review 2: Nina Armstrong goes through identity crisis when her white mother and black father go through a divorce. Not only is she now living in a split family unit, but now she is living between two races. Being a freshman in High School is hard enough, but having to choose who to be friends with based on the color of their skin is cha
... morellenging. Everything around her seems to be tumbling down and the only thing that gives her guidance is the through the research and story of her great-great grandmother Sarah Armstrong, a runaway slave, whom her father is writing about. “Black, White, Other” is a journey of self-discovery that many young teens face today. Through the divorce of her parents and her life at school she begins to question who she is. Is she black? Is she white? What is she? Does she even need to choose? The novel alternates between Nina’s world in the present and that with her great-great grandmother Sarah in the past. Through the writings of her father from research he creates a historical fiction in which Nina sees parallels within her own current situation. This is an excellent read that many teens and adults can relate to. less
